Persons and Environment: joint ecosystems

Dr. Eugenia Rodríguez Ugalde

The natural disasters that have been happening in recent years should lead us to reflect on what we should do to take care of our common home, which is the planet.

Every day we read and hear about the effects of climate change on living beings and the environment, such as, the rise in sea level, droughts in some places and floods in others, the increase in temperature, which is causing the extinction of some species and how all this is affecting human health and behavior. Therefore, we must ask ourselves what actions I can take at home, at work, at my place of study, with my family and friends, to help reverse this process of destruction of our planet.

If we can understand the relationship between interior ecology, social ecology and environmental ecology, we will be able to carry out actions to take care of ourselves among all people and at the same time protect the environment.

From now on, we will talk about human ecology (internal and social ecology) and environmental ecology. We will start by saying that ecology studies the relationship between living things. Human ecology refers to the interaction between people and cultures. Environmental ecology studies the relationship between living things and the environment.

Some of the principles that sustain deep ecology emphasize a series of statements that all of us must analyze:

  • Human and non-human life on our planet are closely linked. What the human species does has a direct impact on the environment. However, this relationship cannot be one of exploitation, but one of efficient administration.
  • Human beings do not have the right to reduce the diversity of species, except to satisfy their vital needs, but at the same time, an obligation must be generated in the preservation of said biodiversity.
  • Human interference is currently excessive in non-human life (environment) and is growing rapidly. It is essential to slow down this process.
  • The current policies of each nation must contribute to modifying social, economic, technological and ideological structures, in such a way that they contribute to improving human and environmental ecology.
  • An ideological change must be made that emphasizes the importance of people's quality of life, rather than reaching a higher socioeconomic level.

Undoubtedly, with industrialization, problems related to environmental ecology have accelerated. In an effort to achieve progress and economic development, human beings destroy nature and do not worry about reversing the process. Over the years, the deterioration of the environment will be noticed more and more.

Human ecology emphasizes that the population must be educated so that people relate in an empathic way, that they can manage their emotions, that they can live harmoniously with others in any space and that the life of other species is respected. Starting with respect for human life is essential to improve interaction with the rest of the ecosystems.
